Bernhard Riesenkoenig, 88, of Medina, Texas, passed away on December 15,2025. Born June 12, 1937, in Rheinbach Stadt, Germany, Bernhard carried one clear dream as a boy: to go to sea. At 17, he made it happen, and he never looked back.
He built a remarkable life as a Merchant Marine, working hard, continuing his schooling, and earning his way to Captain. For more than 52 years, the world was his route map. He sailed across oceans, through ports and storms and calm waters alike, respected for his steadiness, capability, and quiet leadership.
Bernhard is survived by his wife of 42 years, Norine Riesenkoenig; four children; thirteen grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In retirement, Bernhard and Norine moved from Houston to Medina, Texas, where life slowed down in the best way. He loved his dogs and cats and had a deep appreciation for the wildlife around him, enjoying the simple presence of living things. He also had a great sense of humor —steady, timely, and enjoyed by everyone around him.
Bernhard will be remembered for his work ethic, independence, calm strength, and the way he turned a boyhood drearn into a lifetime of accomplishment, then found joy in the quiet moments afterward. Service and memorial information will be shared by the family.
