Lester Eugene Walker, 86, affectionately known as "Gene" within the immediate family circle, and "Les" within his professional circle, peacefully passed away at his home in Bandera, Texas on April 5, 2026. Born on the Morris Ranch in Fredericksburg, Texas on January 20, 1940, to Ben and Viola Walker, he was the third of their four sons.
He graduated from Boerne High School in 1958 and Texas State University in 1962. His educational pursuit led him to Taft High School in Taft, Texas as a High School Teacher for a short time, and then back to Texas State where he successfully completed his master’s degree. From there he entered the collegiate ranks as a College Professor and student, completing his goal of Doctor of Philosophy Degrees at The University of Wisconsin, Oregon State University and North Florida University. He was also actively involved in the American Arabian Horse Association, competing and showing in various disciplines of that breed of horse. An avid fisherman found him on the water whenever possible, including various states as well as Scotland, where he traveled to complete an ancestry tree of the Walker/Buckalew side of his parents.
After leaving the college ranks, he returned to his home state and assumed a teaching position at Edgar Allen Poe middle school in San Antonio, Texas, where he eventually retired after sixteen years of successful service. That didn't stop him from working though. With a Minor in photography, he created a Videography business in Bandera, Texas, where he videoed deposition hearings for attorneys and converted 16mm family recordings into DVD formats. He also videoed wild game hunts throughout south Texas.
As a shotgun enthusiast he competed and won several National Titles in Skeet Shooting Tournaments across Texas and nationally.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Viola, older brothers Ben and Homar Walker.
He is survived by his son Scott Montgomery Walker of Reno, NV, daughter Lisa Alene Shaw and grandson Bradley Shaw of Hoschton, Ga., numerous nieces, nephews and his youngest brother, Donnie Walker of Bandera, Texas
The family would like to invite all family and friends to the Graveside service at 11am on Saturday April 18, 2026, at Bandera Cemetery.
The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful care and love shown by Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital Hospice Organization staff for making his remaining days as comfortable and peaceful as they were.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Bandera Funeral Chapel, Bandera, Texas, to complete the end of his journey.
