Lorelei Hankins

September 2, 1933 — April 27, 2021

Lorelei Hankins passed away surrounded by her family at the ranch in Rocksprings, Texas on April 27, 2021. Lorelei was born September 2, 1933 at the "Old Ranch" in Edwards County to Lowell F. and Sarah Boutwell Hankins. She attended school in Rocksprings, Texas and then Texas Tech University where she was a member of the TTU Rodeo Team. She developed a love of ranching and livestock at an early age at her Daddy's side. She ranched in Crockett, Reagan, Brewster, Edwards and other West Texas counties. She prided herself on raising high quality Rambouillet sheep, Angora goats, and beef cattle. Her horses were most special though, beginning with her first paint pony Fritzy. Her hard work and dedication continued with the Hankins Brothers Production Sales for 34 years. She helped with sales from San Angelo, to Fort Worth, to San Antonio and one year to Warrenton, Virginia. She hauled horses to breeding farms and trainers all over the United States. She made friends far and wide in the horse community and never met a stranger while on the road. Following in her father's footsteps, she was awarded the 50-year breeder award from the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) in 2013. The Lorelei Hankins Ranch also received the AQHA's Ranching Heritage Breeder designation. She was an active 4-H leader in Crockett and Edwards counties and her horse judging teams held a special place in her heart. She was also a member of the Ozona Woman's League, Ozona United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church of Rocksprings, and a lifetime member of Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Louise Morriss. She is survived by her two children, Kay Stewart and husband Eddie of Ozona and Cliff McMullan of Eldorado. She had four grandchildren, Lana Wagner and husband Will of Lenorah, Texas, Jake Stewart and wife Lauren of Cypress, Texas, Jess McMullan and wife Michelle of Bandera, Texas and Luke McMullan of Crested Butte, Colorado. She had five great-grandchildren that were the light of her life Patton, Lorelei and Worth Wagner, Mason McMullan, and Jett Stewart. She is also survived by her favorite travelling partner, Tyne Lomax of Rocksprings, Texas, longtime employee and friend Juan Soto, and special friend Tom Maddux of North Platte, Nebraska. Special thanks to Dr. Will Griffin and Alvis F. Johnson Home Health and Hospice of Sonora, Texas for their compassionate care. Visitation will be from 4PM-6PM on Saturday, May 1. The funeral will be held at 2PM on Sunday, May 2. Visitation and the funeral will be held at the First Baptist Church in Rocksprings, Texas. Interment will follow in the Rocksprings Cemetery.
