Lytle Stephen Montague

Lytle Stephen Montague passed away peacefully on July 17, 2023, at San Antonio Metro Methodist Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born on January 19, 1960, at Cherry Point Naval Air Station, North Carolina. He was the third child of Paul Bruce Montague and Stephanie Mary Shong Montague. He was named for his ancestor, Laura Lytle and her brother, the Texas rancher and cattle driver John Lytle.

Lytle was a unique and loved individual. Very early in his life it became apparent that he saw and experienced the world differently. Eventually, he was diagnosed with a complex neurodevelopmental disorder which included severe autism. Lytle loved the outdoors, and the multiple sensory experiences to be found there. He particularly loved horseback riding, enabled by his family’s roots in the Texas hill country and patient, loving parents. Lytle was an incredible athlete and loved running and climbing. His love of running continued until illness made that impossible. His military family allowed him to travel the world - before age 6 he had lived in Texas, Japan, the Mojave Desert of California, North Carolina, and Virginia. He lived at Texas State Assisted Living Centers most of his adult life, first in Austin and then in San Antonio.

He was surrounded by professional and compassionate caretakers who understood his special needs, and for whom the family is very grateful. Most of all, Lytle was a teacher - anyone who spent time with him gained insight into his particular ways of communicating and interacting with the world. We learned not to underestimate him simply because we couldn’t understand him perfectly. He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Regina Montague. He is survived by his siblings: Bruce Robert Montague of Santa Cruz, CA; Katherine Montague Rowley and her husband Richard, of Castleton on Hudson, NY; Armella Montague Grainger and her husband Charles, of Goode, VA; Sheila Montague, of Goode, VA; Paul Montague and his wife Jonelle, of Conygham, PA; and Cyrus Montague of Bandera, TX. He has 10 nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Friday July 21, 2023, at Grimes Funeral Chapel, Bandera TX at 10 AM, followed by a Service of Remembrance at Grimes Funeral Chapel at 11 AM.
